Discrimination towards Judo and Jiu Jitsu Athletes: An Instructor’s Perspective

Judo and jiu jitsu instructor Ronald Javier Aguado Sauñe has denounced discrimination towards these contact sports. According to his statements, category C of the “School Games”, which covers ages 14 to 17, would only reach the macro-regional stage, without the opportunity to qualify for a South American competition.

“It is said that this discrimination is due to the lack of funding that should be allocated to our athletes; however, I feel that this is a lie, because every year this money is allocated to support athletes. It is discrimination against contact athletes,” Aguado said.

This problem first arose two years ago and has prevented athletes from competing at higher levels. Initially, this limitation for athletes in this category was due to the health emergency, since, according to Sauñe’s testimony, there was concern about the risk of clusters and points of contagion.

“Two years ago, support for athletes in category C was stopped, supposedly due to the health emergency and the smaller budget, but that is over and they have not returned and there are no Peruvian representatives at this level in international competitions. Not only that, it is also the reason for abandoning the sport,” Aguado emphasized.

According to instructor Ronald Javier Aguado Sauñe, this obstacle faced by judo and jiu jitsu athletes could also be the reason behind the decrease in the number of Ayacucho athletes and the lack of regional representation in the senior categories, as they feel they are completely abandoned.

The same situation occurs in the sport of karate, where none of the categories in the “School Games” have representatives who can compete in international events such as the South American Games, which are the objective of these sporting activities for students.

On the other hand, in the first stage of the “School Games”, instructor Aguado leads a small delegation of 14 athletes, of which he estimates that 10 of his athletes will qualify for the macro regional stage.

“We are confident that with the preparation our athletes have had, we will be able to reach the macroregional stage directly. I trust in the ability of my students, in their training from Monday to Sunday, to achieve important medals for the region,” said Aguado.
