Stricker pays for botched start

Dominic Stricker was unable to repeat his strong performance from last year at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old from Bern lost in the first round to Frenchman Arthur Fils 3:6, 2:6, 6:3, 4:6.

Stricker, who had only resumed competition a month ago after persistent back problems, only found his way into the game towards the end against Fils (ATP 34), who was almost two years younger, but had to throw in the towel after 2:05 hours.

Stricker had no chance in the first two sets. He was unable to find any rhythm, especially when Fils served, after the two had to wait around three hours for their match to begin due to the light rain that kept coming. The Swiss player himself had to give up his serve three times, making it 1:3 in the first set and 0:1 and 0:3 in the second, and was thus decisively behind early on both times.

The tide turned in the third set. Stricker was now absolutely equal. After a break to 5:3, he shortened the lead. In the end, however, he was unable to make up for his bad start. After Stricker missed a chance to make it 5:5 in the fourth set on his own serve, he made a double and then a simple backhand error.

At this moment, Stricker also paid the price for his long injury break and the resulting lack of automatism. Since his comeback, he has won three Challenger tournaments and now only one match in Wimbledon. Since he reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time on the London grass last year, he will now drop to around 170th place in the rankings.

Djokovic dispels injury concerns

Novak Djokovic continues to demonstrate his incredible ability to bounce back. Less than a month after his knee operation for a torn meniscus, which had made his start highly questionable, the 37-year-old Serb didn’t give Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva a chance in the first round, winning 6:1, 6:2, 6:2.

“I’m very happy with how I felt on the court. I didn’t know how it would really feel. Training is different from a match,” said Djokovic. He could draw level with record champion Roger Federer with his eighth title on grass this year.

Rublew already eliminated

Andrei Rublev was the first top ten player to be eliminated. The sixth-ranked player in the world rankings from Russia lost to the Argentinian Francisco Comesaña (ATP 122) in four sets in his Grand Slam debut.

Defending champion Vondrousova already out

Defending champion Marketa Vondrousova was eliminated in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. The Czech was defeated by Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (WTA 83) under the closed roof of the Centre Court by a surprisingly clear 4:6, 2:6.

As the last defending champion, Steffi Graf was eliminated in the opening match 30 years ago. Vondrousova had won the grass tournament last year as an unseeded player. However, after a hip injury that forced her to retire in Berlin ten days ago, she was not at full strength. (abu/sda)
