Cheers and ecstasy – millions of fans celebrate victory over Denmark

The DFB team’s entry into the quarter-finals caused millions of cheers on Germany’s streets and fan miles. In many German cities, there was no stopping the crowd after the final whistle. On Berlin’s Ku’damm, fans celebrated with a motorcade and fireworks.

During the celebrations after the 1:1 against Switzerland, a strange scene took place in the stands: Julian Nagelsmann made his way to his brother, but a well-known TV face got in the way: Klaas Heufer-Umlauf. The national coach’s reaction went viral.

The draw against Switzerland on the last matchday of the group phase secured the German team victory in the group. The players and coaching staff are naturally very happy – and the first thing they want to share is their loved ones. As the stadium empties, Julian Nagelsmann wants to celebrate the victory with his brother André. Video footage shows him climbing over the barrier at the edge of the pitch and walking purposefully towards the stands.

Then a strange scene takes place that causes laughter and derision. Suddenly a familiar face appears and extends his hand to the national coach. It is Klaas Heufer-Umlauf, who apparently thinks Nagelsmann is greeting him so happily.

The national coach reacts politely, agrees, but then decisively pushes the presenter aside. His brother André, eleven years older than him, is waiting behind him, and he then hugs him exuberantly after a handshake.

Heufer-Umlauf, wearing a blue jersey of the regional league club VfB Oldenburg, can still be seen in the background, taking a large sip of his drink.

The video was originally shared by the “Sportschau” on Instagram – but is only now making the rounds on social media. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more unpleasant situation than the one in which Klaas Heufer-Umlauf thought Julian Nagelsmann was coming to the stands because of him,” writes a user on “X”. Tennis legend Boris Becker apparently also finds the scene amusing. He commented “lol” – the acronym for “laughing out loud”.

Klaas Heufer-Umlauf was then able to enjoy a conversation with a DFB star: Toni Kroos took the time to talk to him, the two have been close friends for years. A conciliatory moment for the presenter, who is notoriously not the biggest football fan.
