For Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne, the European Championship exit is a heavy blow. He reacted emotionally and got involved in a verbal exchange with an Italian reporter, who then went on to say something.

However, De Bruyne muttered “stupid” to himself as he left: “stupid.”
Palmeri had not initially noticed this on Monday evening in Düsseldorf, when the Belgians had said goodbye to the European Championship with a 0:1 (0:0) defeat in the round of 16 against France. It was also not audible on the video that he himself had filmed of the conversation with De Bruyne.

But after seeing other videos, he went on to insult De Bruyne. “Hey Kevin, a little reminder for you: The golden generations of France, England, Germany and Spain that you mentioned ALL REACHED A FINAL!” he wrote. And that De Bruyne was just a “normal footballer” who only wanted to hear questions telling him how good he was. “Stupid brat,” Palmeri concluded his post: “Stupid brat.”

This episode from the mixed zone says a lot about the changes in sports journalism in the digital age – it also shows how deeply the Belgians have been affected by their failure. Because for the 33-year-old De Bruyne, it could actually have been the last chance to win a title with the national team. And he knows that very well.
