Harmless French through own goal in the quarter-finals – The victory over Belgium in video

France is in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 win over Belgium, but is still waiting for a goal from open play. The winning goal for the French team was scored by Belgian Vertonghen. The highlights are in the video.

For Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne, the European Championship exit is a heavy blow. He reacted emotionally and got involved in a verbal exchange with an Italian reporter, who then went on to say something.

Kevin De Bruyne was annoyed – and this question made the Belgian captain really angry. “Kevin, does it hurt that the golden generation hasn’t reached the final yet again?” a journalist asked him. De Bruyne has been annoyed for years by the talk of the so-called golden Belgian generation, which was often seen as the favorite but never managed to win a title.

So he looked in the direction of the reporter and asked back: “What is a golden generation?” The reporter replied: “Yours!” De Bruyne asked: “And you say that France, England, Spain and Germany don’t have a golden generation?” This time the journalist, the Italian Tancredi Palmeri, didn’t answer. “Okay, thank you,” De Bruyne said, then he broke off the conversation and left.

So far, the verbal exchange has not been a glorious page for Palmeri. He works for the Qatari sports channel beIN SPORTS and is described by Wikipedia as an “internet personality”, perhaps because he has 225,000 followers on the platform X. However, De Bruyne muttered “stupid” to himself as he left: “stupid.”

Palmeri had not initially noticed this on Monday evening in Düsseldorf, when the Belgians had said goodbye to the European Championship with a 0:1 (0:0) defeat in the round of 16 against France. It was also not audible on the video that he himself had filmed of the conversation with De Bruyne.

The Belgians have been deeply affected by their failure at the European Championship

But after seeing other videos, he went on to insult De Bruyne. “Hey Kevin, a little reminder for you: The golden generations of France, England, Germany and Spain that you mentioned ALL REACHED A FINAL!” he wrote. And that De Bruyne was just a “normal footballer” who only wanted to hear questions telling him how good he was. “Stupid brat,” Palmeri concluded his post: “Stupid brat.”

This episode from the mixed zone says a lot about the changes in sports journalism in the digital age – it also shows how deeply the Belgians have been affected by their failure. Because for the 33-year-old De Bruyne, it could actually have been the last chance to win a title with the national team. And he knows that very well.

“We had a plan. We played well. It’s a shame we conceded a goal like that,” said the Manchester City midfielder before he was drawn into the unpleasant dialogue with the influencer. However, the match plan of letting the French play and then countering was pulverized four minutes before the end of regular time. Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen deflected a shot from Randal Kolo Muani so unluckily that goalkeeper Koen Casteels had no chance. “In the end, a terrible goal decided the outcome,” said Casteels.

Cheers for the French and disappointed Belgians – The scenes after the final whistle in the video

France advances to the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship thanks to a late own goal by Belgian Vertonghen. Immediately after the final whistle, the French are overjoyed, but De Bruyne’s face is full of disappointment.

What will happen next for De Bruyne is unclear. It could even be that the defeat against France was his last game for Belgium. “It’s too early to say, let me process it first,” he explained. De Bruyne, who really has to be counted among the golden generation alongside players like Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, is considering retirement. Harzard and Courtois were not even part of this European Championship. If De Bruyne really does retire, only top scorer Lukaku would be left.
