EM Ticker: Shot fired at motorcade in Tuttlingen – Suspected perpetrator identified

After a motorcade was shot at in Tuttlingen, the police have identified the suspected perpetrator. According to the Rottweil public prosecutor’s office, a 60-year-old man is strongly suspected of having fired the targeted shot from a building with an air pistol. A driver was injured in the arm. The 32-year-old Romania fan had opened the car window after his team’s match against Slovakia on Wednesday evening when he suddenly felt pain in his left upper arm.

The man discovered a small bleeding wound on his arm and found an air pressure projectile – a so-called diabolo projectile – in the car. This is a variety of roughly goblet-shaped ammunition, usually made of metal.

The 60-year-old is being investigated for grievous bodily harm. A window in the building that was open at the time of the crime, which also matched the suspected trajectory of the shot previously determined by the police, led investigators onto the right track. After a search of the apartment in question, the suspected murder weapon was confiscated.

9:38 a.m.: Mats Hummels in talks as replacement for Jonathan Tah

Apparently, champions Bayer Leverkusen are considering Mats Hummels. According to Kicker, there are speculations about the 35-year-old, whose contract with BVB was not renewed despite a strong second half of the season. Hummels is said to be a replacement for international player Jonathan Tah, who is said to have reached an agreement with FC Bayern Munich. Tah is a regular in the German defense at the European Championships, but missed the last sixteen match against Denmark due to a yellow card suspension.

As a leader and a good communicator, Hummels could fit into coach Xabi Alonso’s possession-based football. He recently responded to speculation about his professional future with humor. “It’s difficult to find a jersey for a sport that doesn’t result in stupid rumors,” the 35-year-old defender recently wrote in an Instagram story.

When Germany plays in the quarter-finals on Friday, the state parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia will also meet on the same day for its last plenary session before the summer break. Politicians are allowed to wear German jerseys before the game. However, according to a state parliament spokesman, they must wear a blazer or jacket over them when giving a speech.

“During a plenary session, clothing must be appropriate to the dignity of the House,” said the spokesman: “For example, during a speech at the lectern by wearing a jacket or blazer,” which “can also be combined with sporty clothing.”

2:33 a.m. Georgia proud despite European Championship exit

Georgia’s newcomers to the European Championship felt like winners despite their 4-1 defeat in the round of 16 against title favorites Spain. “I am proud of what the players have achieved. The team has developed fantastically. It was a great experience for everyone,” said national coach Willy Sagnol.

Despite falling behind early on against Georgia, the Spanish national team did not let itself down and will now face Germany in the quarter-finals. Rodri, Fabián, Williams and Olmo ensured a clear result with their goals. The highlights in the video.

His players were also delighted. “We are very, very proud of what we have achieved. We came here as a team that nobody expected anything from. We are super proud to have even made it to the knockout rounds,” said captain Guram Kashia.

The clear defeat against the strong Spaniards did not change that. “The country is proud of us, we are proud of ourselves. We brought Georgian football to Europe. That’s why we are happy, even though we lost,” said Kashia, adding: “We can go home with our heads held high.”

21:45: Vogts criticizes DFB team

After the 2-0 victory in the round of 16 against Denmark, former national coach Berti Vogts hopes that the German team will improve its performance over the rest of the tournament. “One or two of the German team can do a bit more; the German team cannot afford to make the same kind of foolishness as they did against the Danes against the absolute top teams,” said Vogts in his column for the “Rheinische Post”.

Vogts pointed out that Denmark is not one of these top teams. “However, one should not praise the 2-0 win against the Danes too much, it had nothing to do with world class. It was a hard piece of work, the German team had the necessary luck in the decisive moments, and the Danish team is no longer as great a team as it used to be,” Vogts continued.

20:39: Mbappé and the trouble with the mask

Kylian Mbappé would prefer to play in the European Championship round of 16 without a special mask. “It’s terrible to play with a mask. I always change it if there’s something that bothers me and doesn’t work properly,” said the French football star at a press conference on Sunday evening. On Monday, the French will face Belgium in Düsseldorf (6 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV). The 25-year-old Mbappé suffered a broken nose at the start of the European Championship.

“It’s difficult to play with the mask on. You can’t see very well, you sweat under it – then you have to let the sweat out. On the first day I had the feeling that I was wearing 3D glasses and that it wasn’t me playing,” said the new signing from Champions League winners Real Madrid. “I hate it, it’s really very irritating. I’ve already changed it five times.” However, he still can’t do without the mask.

14:00: Spalletti remains in office despite European Championship exit

Despite Italy’s embarrassing performance in the European Championship round of 16, association president Gabriele Gravina has ruled out any personnel consequences. He himself will not resign, and he also expressed his confidence in national coach Luciano Spalletti. “Demanding resignations is unacceptable,” said the football official on Sunday in Iserlohn. “Spalletti has our confidence. We need patience,” added the 70-year-old, referring to the coach who, like Gravina, has been criticized after the 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.

12.39: Depay has to leave Atlético

Two days before the European Championship round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Romania, Spanish top club Atlético Madrid announced the departure of Dutch striker Memphis Depay. Depay, Spaniard Mario Hermoso and Brazilian Gabriel Paulista will not receive new contracts and will therefore leave for free, Atlético confirmed on Sunday on various club channels.

The 30-year-old Depay only moved from FC Barcelona to Madrid in January 2023. At times, however, he was criticized there as much as he is currently from the Dutch side. Many fans would rather see long-time Bundesliga professional Wout Weghorst in the center-forward position than Depay. However, coach Ronald Koeman has set his sights on him, not least because he could replace Robin van Persie as the national team’s record goalscorer at this tournament. He is still four goals away from that.

“I can handle criticism well. I’m used to it,” said Depay on Sunday at a press conference in the Dutch team’s headquarters in Wolfsburg. In the European Championship round of 16 match against outsiders Romania on Tuesday in Munich, he also wants to play for Koeman, who has come under criticism. “The coach’s trust is important to me. I feel that and I want to repay him,” said Depay.
