Emotional Farewell: Andy Murray Exits Men’s Doubles at Wimbledon

Andy Murray’s farewell tour at Wimbledon has experienced its first emotional highlight with his elimination from the men’s doubles.

“I love this sport and if there was a possibility, I would play forever,” said a visibly moved Andy Murray into the microphone on the Centre Court at Wimbledon. Only to immediately add: “But that possibility doesn’t exist. My body doesn’t allow it anymore.”

A few minutes earlier, he and his brother Jamie had lost in the first round of doubles. The Murray brothers were defeated by the Australian duo Rinky Hijikata/John Peers in two sets.

Federer, Nadal and Co. have their say

However, the result was not the main focus for the Murrays that evening. Andy Murray was grateful for the opportunity to play doubles with his brother thanks to a wildcard. The fact that the match took place on Centre Court made the event all the more special. It was the first time in almost 30 years that a first-round doubles match was played on the main court.

The former British tennis player and long-time BBCJournalist Sue Barker, who retired in 2022, led the emotional interview with Murray. In addition, the great moments in the Scot’s career were played on the stadium’s screens. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams paid Murray great respect.

The mixed doubles and Olympia still remain

It is not yet clear whether this was Murray’s last appearance on the Centre Court at Wimbledon. The three-time Grand Slam champion is planning to compete in the mixed doubles alongside Emma Raducanu. After that, however, it will definitely be over for the 37-year-old at the All England Club.

The two-time individual Olympic champion will compete in his last tournament at the upcoming Summer Games in Paris.
