Emotional Return for Pablo Sabbag as Alianza Lima Faces Alianza Atlético in Liga 1 Clausura Tournament

Alianza Lima faced Alianza Atlético on matchday 2 of the 2024 Liga 1 Clausura Tournament

Alianza Lima faced Alianza Atlético on Saturday, July 20 at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium for the second day of the 2024 Liga 1 Clausura Tournament. Upon entering the field, striker Pablo Sabbag was quite emotional and on the verge of tears after returning to being a starter with the ‘blue and white’ team.

Following the unexpected departure of Kevin Serna, coach Alejandro Restrepo was forced to decide who would accompany Hernán Barcos in the attack and the Colombian striker was chosen, who after eight months had the opportunity to start playing for Matute.

Let’s remember that the ‘Sheikh’ had already had minutes in the competition, as he came on in the agonizing 3-2 victory of the ‘intimo’ team over César Vallejo at the Mansiche stadium in Trujillo. On that occasion, he replaced Adrián Arregui. It should be noted that he also had more than 10 minutes in the duel against Bolívar for the Copa Ciudad de Reyes.

Without a doubt, Sabbag’s return is key for the remainder of the championship, even more so considering Cecilio Waterman’s injury and Gabriel Costa’s departure, which was recently made official at Universitario de Deportes.

Alianza Lima took the lead on its return to Matute. The team from La Victoria had a penalty in their favour after the foul caused by Pablo Sabbag inside the rival area. Sebastián Lozano, the main referee of the match, did not think twice and made the decision to award the kick from the 12 steps.

In the 34th minute, Alianza Atlético defender Rodrigo Castro was very forceful in marking Sabbag. In this way, he unnecessarily committed an infraction inside the area, for which he ended up being punished with a penalty.

Despite the complaints from the Sullanenses, the referee did not hesitate and awarded the maximum penalty in favour of the ‘grones’. Although it was the attacker who provoked the play, the penalty was executed by Hernán Barcos. The ‘Pirata’, determined, took the ball and shot strongly towards the first goal post.

For its part, Alianza Lima will be back in action in the competition when it faces Universitario de Deportes at the Monumental stadium on matchday 3 of the Clausura. This match is scheduled for next Friday, July 26, starting at 8:30 p.m. in Peru.

It is worth noting that this will be the second edition of the Peruvian football classic this season, as in the Apertura both teams faced each other at the National Stadium. On that occasion, the score was 1-0 in favor of the ‘merengues’ thanks to a goal by Andy Polo.

Meanwhile, Alianza Atlético will do the same with Melgar on Thursday, July 15 at the Campeones del 36 stadium. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. local time and will be broadcast on the Liga 1 Max channel.
