Empowering Autistic Adults through Archery: A Successful Collaboration Between Jarlandin Archers and Gem Autism Spectrum Group

The Jarlandin Archers approached the mutual aid group (Gem) autism spectrum group, which is located in Gap (there is another one in Manosque) for three hours of joint archery practice on their site at the Grabinski stadium in Saint-Auban. Danielle Delhoume, coordinator of the Gem, came with seven people, young adults with mild autism, to test this practice and identify its beneficial contours.A member affected by this disease and an archer in Saint-Auban suggested this archery session“.

The Gem, funded by the Regional Health Agency, offers multiple activities to these people, “We are a resource place to meet up. Multiple activities exist: canoeing, mountain biking, yoga, drawing, climbing, dancing, tree climbing, painting, artistic, cooking, etc. Everything that members want to do. This afternoon, I notice that they have not withdrawn, it is a sign because if the stress is too great, the reflex is to withdraw from the activity“There was enthusiasm in the air during these few hours together.

An experience to be repeated

Fabrice Maillet, co-president of the Archers Jarlandins, coach, was surrounded by members of the club, he showed great empathy in managing these few hours. It’s new for us, I try to teach them like beginners that they are. It’s going very well, and what’s more, they are successful, they are very good, look!“And indeed, the accuracy of the shots was remarkable.

Archery requires a lot of concentration, we try to put them in a position to succeed, because when you start to succeed in your shots, it’s very motivating!” He pursues : “They can be very strong because you have to be very precise, not listen to what is happening around you, you have to concentrate. It is a first experience that deserves to be repeated. We will try to train ourselves to do this type of supervision“. Two archers for a day were in heaven. Virginie, 52, had already practiced archery a few years ago

I am happy to touch up my bow, it is very beneficial for me, it allowed me (in Marseille) to lower my blood pressure, and at the end of the day, I slept much better. It allows you to refocus. You have to pay attention to safety rules, to your posture, you have to concentrate“. Lorianne is 29 years old, it’s the first time she shoots a bow.”I find it very interesting to find a new activity, I am with the people of Gem, caring, and I would never have done this alone. You have to find the right gestures, the right posture, it is very beneficial!“A great experience that should be repeated.
