Earlier, Gareth Southgate sent a message to England’s critics after eliminating Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

Before the match at AufSchalke Stadium, Southgate was heavily criticized by the English public. Because the Three Lions’ performance was far from the supporters’ expectations.

Southgate was also unable to move in the face of the sharp criticism. After eliminating Slovakia, the former Middlesbrough coach had a message to convey.

“Tonight is an example of championship football. It’s about character, it’s about heart and fighting spirit,” Southgate said at a press conference, as reported by Independent.

“We didn’t defend very well at the start of the game and struggled to break the deadlock in attack,” the 53-year-old coach explained.

The coach who has been in charge of England since 2016 or eight years without ever winning the tournament, said that changing players was one of the keys to success.

One of them was Southgate’s decision to bring on Ivan Toney in extra time. According to him, all of this was done with careful consideration.

“I’m very proud of the players for the spirit they showed. Everyone we put into the game played a part and helped us get over the line.

“They all push each other and help each other. Tonight, that’s what made the difference,” said the coach who is considered pragmatic and lacks strategic intelligence.
