Euro 2024 Controversy: Serbian Threat, Fan Chants, and Police Involvement

Euro 2024 is causing a lot of talk outside the pitch. Last weekend it was reported that the police in Germany shot dead a gunman, there have been fights in the streets of the Teutonic country and now Serbia is threatening to withdraw.

Serbian Football Association Secretary General Jovan Surbatovic threatened to withdraw the national team from the European Championship on Thursday following chants heard from a section of fans watching the match between Croatia and Albania. The supporters chanted “kill the Serb.”

Speaking to Serbian state broadcaster RTS, Surbatovic called on UEFA to impose a “severe” sanction against the Croatian and Albanian national team associations, or else Serbia would take action.

“What happened is outrageous and we will ask UEFA to sanction the team, even if that means not continuing in the competition. We will demand that UEFA sanction the federations of both teams. If UEFA does not punish them, we will think about how to proceed,” said Surbatovic.

Serbia was already fined £12,550 by UEFA after its fans threw objects during the match against England. And, like Albania, it was also sanctioned because fans from both countries displayed banners with nationalist maps.

“We were punished for isolated cases and our fans behaved much better than the others. One fan was punished for racist insults and we do not want it to be attributed to others. We Serbians are gentlemen and we have an open heart, so I ask the fans to remain gentlemen,” he concluded.

It is still unclear whether the Serbian team will be able to take to the field for the match against Slovenia in Group C of the European Championship.
