After Italy, the second European Championship finalist of 2021 also put in a weak performance in the round of 16. However, it was still enough for England to advance – because two stars scored late.
Co-favorite England reached the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship with great effort and thanks to two late goals. The team of controversial coach Gareth Southgate was on the verge of being eliminated for a long time in Gelsenkirchen against outsider Slovakia.
Kane keeps England in the tournament
In the 2-1 (1-1, 0-1) after extra time, former Dortmund player Jude Bellingham kept his team in the game with an overhead kick goal in injury time (90th + 5th minute). Then Bayern striker Harry Kane scored the celebrated winner shortly after the start of extra time (91st).
In front of 47,244 spectators, it looked like a nasty surprise for the multi-million dollar star ensemble from the island for a long time. Ivan Schranz (25th) had put Slovakia in the lead. One day after defending champion Italy was knocked out, however, the second European Championship finalist of 2021 just managed to avoid an early exit. The Three Lions will now face Italy’s conquerors Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Saturday in Düsseldorf.
