Four-goal gala against Georgia – Spain’s quarter-finals in video

Despite falling behind early on against Georgia, the Spanish national team did not let itself down and will now face Germany in the quarter-finals. Rodri, Fabián, Williams and Olmo ensured a clear result with their goals. The highlights in the video.

The German national team will face Spain in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship. The Iberians underlined their title ambitions with their performance in the round of 16. Even Georgia’s surprising lead did not throw the favorites off course.

On Saturday, the German national football team moved into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 (0-0) win against Denmark. Now the opponent has also been decided. The Spanish team beat Georgia in their round of 16 match as expected, but had to deal with a moment of shock in the 4-1 (1-1) defeat.

Robin Le Normand scored an own goal in the 18th minute after Georgia’s first counterattack. The first goal conceded by the Spaniards in the tournament completely turned the one-sided course of the game on its head.

The Spaniards, who had won their group with three victories and a 5-0 goal difference, were not really shocked. The underdogs did have occasional opportunities to counterattack, but overall the favourites stuck to their dominant game. After 25 minutes, the title candidate had played 238 successful passes, while the newcomers to the European Championship had only 42. Spain had almost 90 percent possession. Rodri rewarded their efforts after another siege with a well-considered shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-1 (39′).

“We knew it would be difficult. Georgia is not such a renowned team, but they are strong. We showed that we have character. But it was a difficult game,” said the goalscorer.

Kwaratschelia stuns from the center line

In the second half, the favorites won confidently and deservedly. After Georgian superstar Khvisha Kwarachelia narrowly missed the chance to regain the lead with a long-range shot from the halfway line, Spain struck on the other side. Fabian Ruiz headed in a cross from youngster Lamine Yamal (51′) – Spain had turned the game around and was brimming with enthusiasm, as their opponents had already seen in the European Championship qualifiers.

“From then on it was quite easy. But up until then it was a really tricky game,” said Dani Olmo, who later also got on the scoresheet.

In the two previous games, Georgia had lost 1:3 and 1:7. This time, they were hardly any better at limiting the damage. In the 74th minute, the third goal by the Spaniards, again initiated by 16-year-old Yamal, was disallowed due to a narrow offside position, and a minute later Nico Williams scored to make it 3:1. Olmo then had the chance to make it 4:1, but did not put enough power behind the ball from close range (77th minute). The striker only scored the final goal six minutes later.

The German team faces what is probably the most difficult task this European Championship has to offer in the quarter-finals on Friday. Spain has four wins and a goal difference of 9:1 from four games. Kick-off in Stuttgart is at 6 p.m.

“We are not happy that we are playing against them now. The Germans are playing at home, but we also have our weapons,” said Rodri, looking ahead to the eagerly awaited match.
