Fans are brutally beaten by stewards

Horrifying scenes are taking place on the sidelines of the round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia. A video shows two fans being brutally beaten and kicked by stewards. The background to the incident is still unclear.

During Portugal’s round of 16 victory over Slovenia (3-0 on penalties) in Frankfurt am Main, there were apparently frightening scenes off the pitch. Portuguese newspaper “Record” published video footage in which several stewards can be seen holding two fans inside the arena in one of the large access tunnels and beating them. The Frankfurt police are investigating.

The video, which was probably recorded by other fans in the stands, shows a man being pinned to the ground by two stewards. The other fan is pushed against the wall by four stewards. He is then punched several times to the body and head.

As the stadium visitor falls to the ground, more security guards arrive – all wearing yellow and orange vests with the word “Steward” written on them. Two of the security guards even kick the man lying on the ground.

Nothing is known about the fans’ health status so far

It is still unclear how the violent situation came about and what triggered the security forces’ actions. As the Portuguese newspaper “Correio da Manhã” reports, one of the two tried to run onto the pitch after Cristiano Ronaldo took a penalty. The newspaper cites statements from an eyewitness.

Portugal struggled to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship against Slovenia in a penalty shootout. Things got dramatic in extra time: Ronaldo burst into tears after missing a penalty, but his Portuguese team celebrated in the end. The highlights in the video.

In the comments under the video, users expressed their horror at the footage. One commentator drew the attention of the Frankfurt police and wrote: “I think this is a case for you.” The police have already reacted to the incident. An investigation has been launched on suspicion of bodily harm, the police announced, and commented on this under the video on “X”.

Nothing is known about the man’s health so far, the police said. The European Football Union UEFA was asked about the incident on Wednesday.
