The quarter-finals of the European Championship were completed on Tuesday and with the Netherlands’ 3-0 win over Romania in Munich, the Dutch team became the penultimate team in the standings, followed by Austria, who beat Turkey 2-1 in Leipzig.

SPAIN-GERMANY

Without a doubt, one of the most eagerly awaited quarter-final clashes of the Euro Cup. Rodri’s leadership in lifting Spain out of its first moment of uncertainty, Fabián Ruiz’s class in scoring and assisting, Lamine Yamal’s display of personality and Nico Williams’ striking power unleashed the forcefulness to overcome the warlike Georgia in the round of 16 and avoid the surprise so that Luis de la Fuente’s team can advance in the most important tournament of the Old Continent. Their next challenge will be against Germany, a duel of candidates that will allow them to take advantage of the license to dream.

The elegance of the team that won the World Cup in South Africa (2010) put an end to the scare caused by Robin Le Normand’s own goal, as Rodri’s strike levelled the score in Cologne; while in the second half Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo turned the tables to secure their tickets to the next phase, where the local team awaits.

The German side continue to make steady progress in the Euros and have reaffirmed their status as contenders. On Saturday, they put on an attractive show that was characterised by controversy. In any case, Julian Nagelsmann’s men closed out a 2-0 win against Denmark at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund with goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala to wait with their teeth sharpened for La Furia.

ENGLAND-SWITZERLAND

The other match that is confirmed is the one between England and Switzerland. The British had to suffer more than they imagined to beat Slovakia, as Ivan Schranz had given the Italian Francesco Calzona’s men the lead; but Jude Bellingham’s talent prevented the Slovak miracle in the fifth minute of added time to equalise the match and take the match to extra time. And when the action resumed, Harry Kane sealed the 2-1 scoreline so that Gareth Southgate’s team won again without convincing.

The Swiss, on the other hand, struck a blow against Italy at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. With goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas, Murat Yakin’s men imposed conditions to defeat Luciano Spalletti’s Azzurri, which meant another failure for La Nazionale. The four-time world champions’ crisis grew and showed that winning the Euro 2020 was an oasis in the desert. Since the World Cup that Germany hosted in 2006, Italy has not stopped accumulating disappointments. They were eliminated in the group stage in South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 and did not qualify for the World Cups in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

FRANCE-PORTUGAL

A match that is a repeat of the Euro 2016 final in which Portugal won 1-0 against hosts France. The runners-up team beat Belgium after Jan Vertonghen’s own goal in the 85th minute of play that allowed Didier Deschamps’ men to continue in the race for the title, with Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and N’Golo Kanté as their leaders.

On the other side will be Cristiano Ronaldo and his great Portuguese team, who suffered more than expected against Slovenia and ended up celebrating in the penalty shootout (3-0) after goals from CR7, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva and the brilliant performance of goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who saved shots from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic.

NETHERLANDS-Türkiye

A promising duel is coming up, as the Netherlands will want to confirm their status as a strong team and showed their mettle with a thrashing. Meanwhile, Turkey is coming off the heels of eliminating one of the worst teams, Austria, who won their group over France and the Dutch themselves, whom they beat in the last match of the first round.

The Dutch beat Romania 3-0 in the match that opened the last day of the round of 16 on Thursday. The Clockwork Orange made it into the last eight after beating the Romanians with goals from Cody Gakpo and a double from Donyell Malen. It was a vindication for Ronald Koeman’s team, who had an irregular first phase in which they beat Poland 2-1, drew 0-0 against France and lost 3-2 against Austria.

It was the Austrians who were eliminated after losing 2-1 to Turkey in a thrilling encounter. Merih Demiral gave the Turks the lead and then extended the lead in the second half, while Michael Gregoritsch pulled one back.

The match ended in a dramatic finale, with Turkish goalkeeper Fehmi Mert Günok making the best save of the tournament so far, after flying in to prevent Christoph Baumgartner’s header.
