Evenepoel wins Tour de France stage 7 time trial ahead of leader Pogacar

MADRID, 5 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) won the seventh stage of the Tour de France on Friday, a time trial between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin over 25.3 kilometers, ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who remains the leader in the general classification with an advantage of 32 seconds.

The world champion in this modality imposed his dominance in the specialty by setting the best time at the three intermediate points, surpassing the records previously set by his compatriot Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny), who led the race for much of the day.

The favourites in the general classification started last and set the best times. The first to beat the Belgian’s time was Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Bora Hansgrohe), who finished third in the stage, with a performance that improved and improved to overtake Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike).

The champion of the last two editions of the Tour again finished second in his individual duel with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), demonstrating his lack of competitive rhythm after three months without competing due to the serious fall in the Vuelta al País Vasco.

The winner in 2020 and 2021 was unable to keep up with Evenepoel, who showed his great ability against the clock. However, he managed to gain 25 seconds more advantage over Vingegaard, which gives him a 1’15” advantage in the general classification over the Dane.

The big winner was the Belgian, who remains second in the general classification and is 33 seconds behind Pogacar, after a high-level time trial in which he even had to overcome the scare caused by a puncture, which, fortunately for his interests, was not a problem in taking the victory.

As for the Spaniards, Juan Ayuso (UAE) clocked the fifteenth best time, 1’18” behind the winner, and Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers) crossed the finish line in seventeenth place at 1’27”. Pello Bilbao finished eighteenth at 1’30” behind the winner, while Mikel Landa is far from his chances of a podium in the general classification, having finished 35th at 2’15”.

This Saturday, the ‘Grande Boucle’ will host its eighth stage between Semur-en-Auxois and Colombey-les-Deux-Églises over 183.4 kilometres, a medium-mountain stage in which a sprint finish is not expected, and where explosive riders could shine, without forgetting the options of the breakaway.
