Experience Over 60 Sports at the 13th Munich Sports Festival on July 7th at Königsplatz

American football, capoeira and lacrosse: these are just three of the more than 60 sports that can be tried out at Königsplatz on Sunday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the 13th Munich Sports Festival. The event is organized by the Department of Education and Sports. Tens of thousands of people are expected. “With the large, completely free sports program, we want to encourage as many people as possible to take up active sports, in addition to the enthusiasm for more passive major sporting events such as the current European Football Championship. At Königsplatz, we offer the opportunity to try out new sports with lots of fun and enjoyment, and at the same time show what Munich has to offer in terms of sports,” explains sports representative Florian Kraus.
In addition to traditional, unusual and inclusive sports, four special competitions attract visitors to Königsplatz: Football enthusiasts compete in the Munich Street Soccer Cup. Europe’s largest ninja competition, the “Minga Warrior”, involves climbing over spectacular obstacles. Some of the world’s best slackliners have announced their participation in the “Munich International Speedline Masters” by Gibbon. Breakdance beginners to advanced dancers can compete in battles in one-on-one and three-on-three modes. Food trucks and a beer garden also provide refreshments.
New sports & classics, skyboxing and EURO mascots
“Pickleball, a mix of tennis, table tennis and badminton, is taking part in the Munich Sports Festival for the first time this year – a sport that has become a mega-sport trend in the USA. Darts is also new to the program – a sport that is also becoming increasingly popular,” says Kraus.
But classics such as athletics, judo, climbing and volleyball also come with a great range of participation options. And of course, the sports festival cannot be complete without football: the Bavarian Football Association’s Munich Street Soccer Cup for boys, girls and inclusion teams will once again take place at Königsplatz. The EURO mascot Albärt will also mingle with the visitors and will be happy to pose for snapshots.
On July 7, two athletes will be on site: 20-time kickboxing world champion Marie Lang and 12-time Paralympic champion in biathlon and cross-country skiing Verena Bentele, who are passionate about getting people excited about sport. In the late morning, visitors have the opportunity to get active together with Marie Lang – she will give a skyboxing session, a full-body interval training as a modern fitness variant without physical contact, with a mixture of martial arts and strength training.
Slackline Contest & „Minga Warrior“
The international slackline contest has been a magnet for visitors since the first Munich Sports Festival in 2010 and has now achieved cult status, reports the sports representative. This year the focus is on speed, in direct one-on-one duels.
Kraus: “This guarantees a lot of action.” There are still free places (register for the Speedline Masters at https://pages.gibbon-slacklines.com/events/speedline-masters-munich/registration). Anyone who feels reasonably confident on a slackline can register. Exciting: There is a separate rating for Munich residents. Anyone who has never been on a slackline can try it out in workshops and on many lines.
The “Minga Warrior 2024” will be determined at Europe’s largest competition in ninja sports. After the preliminary rounds, the 128 best women, men and young people will compete in the final rounds, judged according to a knockout system. Beginners can climb, shimmy and swing in a special ninja participation course.
