Fabio Capello Criticizes Italy’s EURO 2024 Performance and Slams Arrogant Spalletti

BANJARMASINPOST.CO.ID – Former coach Fabio Capello is not optimistic about Italy’s future, feels Luciano Spalletti was ‘arrogant’ at EURO 2024 and admits the national team has ‘problems’ without the Milan and Juventus players.

Former Italy coach Fabio Capello commented on Italy’s elimination from EURO 2024 with harsh words. First on Sky Sport Italia and then in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I am a little bit embarrassed, like when I came back from the 1974 World Cup as a footballer,” said the former Milan, Roma and Juventus coach.

Spalletti admitted on Sunday, the day after Italy’s elimination, that being a club coach was not like being a national team coach.

“They are two different jobs,” agreed Capello, who has also coached England and Russia during his coaching career.

“It’s not like a club coach, it’s more like a recruiter. CT has to decide based on what he sees in different leagues.

“He may have his own ideas, but he has to reflect on how the various elements are implemented in his team and, sometimes, adapt.

“The reason is simple. You don’t have time to work every day. Everyone knows what to do at their respective clubs, and you ask footballers to change only if you are in an emergency situation.”

Capello slams arrogant Spalletti and admits Italy is a problem for Juventus and Milan

Spalletti used a three-man defence in pre-Euro friendlies and called up several defenders, but started with a four-man defence in three of the four games.

“From what I saw, I think it caused confusion, especially among the players,” Capello said.

“Jorginho and Fagioli are playmakers, but none of them are Lobotka. They have different skills. Xhaka does what he wants. But I would use another word for Spalletti.”

Which one?

“Arrogance,” Capello replied.

“Against Spain, I think Spalletti acted like a club coach. He took the team out onto the pitch, saying, ‘Here we are. Let’s see if we’re better than them.’ He picked a four-man defence against the best wingers in the European Championship, and we saw who was better.”
