Faced with an economic crisis that is hitting amateur sport in Argentina, rugby is resisting

The bitter cold of the southern winter was there yesterday for the training of the Ciervos Pampas Rugby Club. On the edge of the highway, on a bumpy and dimly lit field, with the toll booth as the only horizon, the players of this small rugby club are not all present. More than the temperatures that are close to zero, it is the state of their wallets that has discouraged them. “Nine players have lost their jobs. Three of them had to give up. Others can no longer afford to pay for transport to come and train,” regrets Caio Varela, president of this atypical club that, for twelve years, has been trying as best it can to make its mark in the exclusive and conservative world of Argentine rugby.
