Thomas Müller is no longer part of the German national team. The 34-year-old offensive player has announced his withdrawal from the DFB team. Müller will only watch the games as a fan in the future, as he announced in a video posted on YouTube.

Müller appealed to the German fans: “Take the enthusiasm and joy of this year’s EURO with you and keep your fingers crossed for the team on the way to the 2026 World Cup. I’ll do that too, now as a fan in the stands and no longer as a player on the green pitch. Bye, see you soon.”

In the ranking of Germany’s most capped players, Müller is in third place with 131 appearances, behind Lothar Matthäus (150) and Miroslav Klose (137). The Bayern pro and crowd favorite celebrated his DFB debut on March 3, 2010 – shortly before the World Cup in South Africa, where he became the tournament’s top scorer at the age of 20. Before his debut, the great Diego Maradona, as guest coach, mistook him for a ball boy. A few months later, Müller sent Argentina and Maradona home with a goal in the World Cup quarter-finals in Cape Town in a 4-0 win.

At the 2024 European Championships on home soil, the veteran had the status of a substitute player. He was substituted on against Scotland and in the quarter-finals against Spain. In total, Müller scored 45 goals in the DFB jersey, which is only surpassed by five professionals. The right-footer scored ten goals at World Cup tournaments, but did not score a single goal at European Championships. Müller is under contract with FC Bayern until 2025.

Thomas Müller on his time in the DFB team: “Great victories and bitter defeats”

“It all started here in Pähl on this sports field. My huge enthusiasm for football. When I played my first international match for the German national team over 14 years ago, I could never have dreamed of all this, great victories and bitter defeats,” said Müller in his video: “Sometimes devastated and then getting back up again. Competing against the best players in the world, alongside fantastic teammates with whom I experienced countless unforgettable moments.”

Müller continued: “It has always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together.” He thanked “all the fans and all the members of the national team.”
