FC Bayern Basketball: Transfer Updates and Departures for the Next Season

As of 30 June, the last working papers in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga expired. The starting signal for the next round of transfer news. The focus here: FC Bayern!

The double winner sorts after the surprising departure of star coach Pablo Laso (56, back to his Spanish homeland) Two professionals will be eliminated on July 1st, a third will be loaned out. And there is concern about a world champion.

Niklas Wimberg (28) is moving back north to Veolia Towers Hamburg with a contract until 2026. Oldenburg native Lukas Meisner (28/contract terminated) is set to replace him there.

In his two years in Munich’s star ensemble, the 2.06 meter tall winger (222 BBL games) did not progress beyond his status as a role player.

“Niklas has already had an eventful career,” says Towers coach Benka Barloschky (36) about the 16-time national player. “He didn’t take the easy route – he worked hard for it. He has trained and played at the highest level for the last two years. The move to Hamburg now means a bigger role and maximum responsibility for him.”

Ulm redeems Nelson Weidemann

The second national player to leave Munich is Nelson Weidemann (25). The three-point expert and defense freak signed for the next two years with Ratiopharm Ulm.

Just like Wimberg, Weidemann had made his breakthrough with the Niners Chemnitz before moving to Bayern. And just like Wimberg, he was no longer satisfied with his limited role with the Euroleague representative. The result: his contract was terminated – and the path to the 2023 champions was clear. Sports director Thorsten Leibenath (49): “Nelson is without a doubt one of the strongest German guards. His irrepressible motor in defense is infectious, his explosiveness and coolness are difficult to stop. Despite his relatively young age, he is very experienced and will be able to bring a complete package to the table.”

Weidemann’s words in the official club announcement sound like a relief: “I’m really happy. I’ve been waiting for months for this moment to finally come.”

Francisco nach Kaunas

The contract of playmaker Sylvain Francisco (26) was also terminated early. The French international is going to Euroleague competitor Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania (one-year contract plus option for another) to work under former Bayern coach Andrea Trichieri (55).

Francisco in the club statement: “I feel great and am happy to be here. I really wanted to play in Andrea Trinchieri’s team. I felt that I needed to be somewhere where I could take on more responsibility.”

Braunschweig loans top talent

Martin Kalu (19) is also leaving Munich – but on a return ticket. The U20 national player is going to the Braunschweig Lions on loan for one season.

The guard (1.98 meters) is considered one of the greatest talents of his year and made his BBL debut at the age of 16 with his former club Rasta Vechta. In Munich, he was mainly used in the ProB and is now expected to mature into a BBL player in the squad forge in Braunschweig. Managing director Nils Mittmann (45): “He already has incredible qualities from athleticism to technique and mindset and we are very much looking forward to working intensively with Martin on his further development in the coming season.”

World champion Bonga to Belgrade?

Bayern, on the other hand, would love to extend the contract of world champion Isaac Bonga (24). But he is checking the market now that his contract has expired. Recently there have been repeated rumors about interested parties from all over Europe who would like to sign the all-rounder.

Most recently, traces led to Anadolu Efes Istanbul and Partizan Belgrade, although the Serbs currently have the best cards…

Fullbeard recommends Vechta!

Just in time for July 1st, Rasta Vechta also presented its first new signing. The new coach Martin Schiller (42) chose Grant Sherfield (24/USA).

This will be the second season in Europe for the combo guard from Texas. He began the first season with the Paris suburban club Metropolitans 92. But the French were in crisis and were eventually relegated. Sherfield was no longer there. After just seven games, he moved to Israel to join Hapoel Be’er Sheva – again in the relegation battle. But he managed to get out of there. Thanks in part to Sherfield (an average of 14 points, 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds).

Before signing in Vechta, Sherfield (1.88 meters) asked full-bearded center Tanner Groves (25), who was part of the surprise team last season. Both played together in college for the Oklahoma Sooners. Sherfield “Tanner only told me positive things about the club, the coaching staff and the city.”

Würzburg gives Schröder’s buddy a second chance

Würzburg’s next new player is actually an old acquaintance: Bazou Koné (30). Due to several ankle injuries, the point guard only made two appearances last season. Now the endless rehab is over – and the Hamburg native with a passport from the Ivory Coast wants to give it another go. Koné is grateful: “I gave everything to get fit again. It is a real blessing for me that I can play for Würzburg again.”

Koné is a childhood friend of NBA star Dennis Schröder (33). He supported him for a long time and even got him a job in Oklahoma City’s farm team in 2019. He then brought him to his Lions in Braunschweig.

According to information from basketball journalist Robert Heusel (“BIG”), Würzburg has also reached an agreement with Jhivvan Jackson (25/Puerto Rico). The American with the Arabic first name was even the BBL top scorer for a long time with 18.4 points while serving for relegated Tübingen!
