FC Bayern Faces Setbacks as Key Players Depart

After winning the double in basketball, FC Bayern has to cope with another painful loss.

Sylvain Francisco (26), the most valuable player (MVP) in the final of Munich’s cup victory, is moving to EuroLeague competitor Zalgiris Kaunas. The Lithuanian record champions released the Frenchman from his contract with a transfer fee, Bayern announced on Monday. Like coach Pablo Laso, Francisco is leaving after just one year. The Spaniard will work in his home country again for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Niklas Wimberg and Nelson Weidemann are also leaving Bayern after their contracts expire, but will remain in the Bundesliga (BBL). Wimberg (28) has signed for two years with Veolia Towers Hamburg, Weidemann (25) has also signed for ratiopharm Ulm until 2026.

“Niklas has already had an eventful career. For the last two years he has trained and played at the highest level. The move to Hamburg now means a bigger role and maximum responsibility for him,” said Hamburg coach Benka Barloschky about national player Wimberg, who was part of the German Olympic squad in Tokyo in 2021.

In Ulm, sports director Thorsten Leibenath has high hopes for Weidemann: “Nelson is without a doubt one of the strongest German guards. His unbridled drive in defense is infectious, his explosiveness and coolness are difficult to stop,” said Leibenath. The new addition will “bring a complete package to the table.”
