Germany is in football fever, and you can see that in the podcast landscape. Well-known football podcasts such as “Rasenfunk”, “50 +2” or “Zeigler & Köster” have switched to tournament mode and are sometimes releasing new episodes every day.

“Einfach mal Luppen” by Felix and Toni Kroos will also be broadcast much more often than once a week during the European Championships in Germany. Toni Kroos, a German national player, will also be at the microphone – and will regularly provide insights into his experiences with the DFB team.

And his brother Felix, who was a professional for a long time and played in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen and Union Berlin, also has one or two anecdotes from his playing career to share. This is also the case in the ninth EM issue of “Luppen”, which was published on Tuesday.

Felix Kroos reported on a meeting with Antonio Rüdiger, during which he was “able to” experience the DFB defense star’s trash-talking skills up close.

Toni Kroos honors teammate Antonio Rüdiger

Toni Kroos, who played with Rüdiger for years not only in the national team but also at Real Madrid, had previously described him as a “cool guy” who knows “that he comes across as special”.

If you were to ask around among strikers, many would agree that they don’t like playing against Rüdiger, Kroos is sure: “It can be painful.” Anyone who gets to know Rüdiger would be able to assess his actions. “He is an outstanding defender, I can’t think of a better one last season,” said Kroos.

At this point, brother Felix chimed in. He could confirm what had been said with a “little anecdote” and remembered an encounter with Rüdiger when he and he were still playing in the Bundesliga.

Felix Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger clash in Bundesliga

Antonio Rüdiger played for VfB Stuttgart at the time, Felix Kroos for Werder Bremen. “I was substituted five minutes before the end and had to defend against him right from the corner,” Felix said and then said:

“The corner hasn’t even been taken yet and he’s insulting me all the way through. I had only just come in and I couldn’t have done anything to him.”

Toni reacted to the story with amusement. “He doesn’t need a backstory,” he said of Rüdiger and laughed. Felix can now also laugh about what he experienced. “In retrospect, I think it was pretty cool,” he said.

Have you heard? This is episode 1 of our podcast “Toni Kroos – The Underrated One”:

Toni then explained that trash talk on the pitch is part of Rüdiger’s game and helps him to perform well. When big games were coming up, Rüdiger always stressed a week beforehand how much he was looking forward to the duels with top strikers like Erling Haaland or Harry Kane.

Turkey achieves a sensation. In a match without a break, the underdog beats the heavily favored Austrians 2-1 and moves into the quarter-finals.
