Financially, it’s not a jackpot either: how much will the Red Devils take home from their European Championship?

Sportingly, a mountain had to be climbed, financially a hole had to be filled. The stakes at Euro 2024 were high for the Red Devils. But France brought an abrupt end to the search. Can the accountants of the football association sleep soundly? A dive into the figures.

Last financial year, the Belgian Football Association (KBVB) suffered a record loss of 11 million euros. Not extremely abnormal in a year without a major tournament, it turned out.

Still, the Red Devils would do well to provide a hefty bonus at the European Championship – where UEFA threw away a total of 331 million euros. Every euro is welcome to support the operation.

What turned out? With 12.25 million euros in prize money, Belgium only did better than the failed World Cup in Qatar and the 2014 World Cup – where the sporting performances were certainly better.

This amount consists of 9.25 million euros in starting money, a bonus of 1.5 million euros for reaching the 1/8 finals, 1 million for the victory against Romania and half a million for the 0-0 score against Ukraine.

Enough money to plug the hole? Not quite.

The strong support provided by our national team – with a team of up to 45 people in base camp – pushed the cost of Euro 2024 up to 5.75 million euros.

Readers with a built-in calculator in their heads already know that the profit from Operation Germany amounts to 6.5 million euros.

Everything that comes after the group stage is a bonus.

Manu Leroy

Less than the football association had calculated?

“We always budget carefully,” Manu Leroy assured before the tournament. “So everything that comes after the group stage is a bonus.”

With a 1/8 final, that bonus has been stuck at the absolute minimum.

No goldmine for players

There was also no pot of gold for the players at the end of the trip in Germany.

The Belgians each receive 96,000 euros gross in bonus for their participation in the 1/8 finals. An amount that could increase to 435,000 in case of final victory.

Once again, Qatar yielded even less in 2022, but at the previous tournaments since Brazil, the Red Devils saw more than 100,000 euros deposited into their bank account each time.

Although that may be the least of their worries at the moment.
