Finding the Best Fit: DeMar DeRozan’s Search for a New NBA Team

This is probably the best free agent still available on the market. The problem, for DeMar DeRozanis that he wants out of the Bulls, now fully engaged in their rebuild, and few teams have the salary cap left to sign him. With Chris Haynes saying he’s willing to be patient, unwilling to sign for the $12.9 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception, that leaves only the Pistons and the Jazz in a position to offer him the contract he wants.

Except that obviously, at almost 35 years old, “DDR” does not want to leave Chicago for Detroit or Utah.

A compromise to be found between salary and sporting ambition?

So the best option for him may be to wait for a sign-and-trade, either to the Lakers or to Miami. But as Barry Jackson explains, you Miami Heraldit is not easy to set up.

Other teams could also benefit from this. In particular, we are talking about Kingswhich could be a surprise destination… but also the Spurs. In San Antonio, DeMar DeRozan has left only good memories and, after the arrival of Chris Paul, this would bring one more veteran to supervise Victor Wembanyama and company.

Knowing that San Antonio still has some salary space, it could stick. The only problem is that the Spurs finished in 14th place in the Western Conference last season (22 wins – 60 losses) and that even by betting on the progression of Victor Wembanyama’s troops thanks to the arrivals of Chris Paul and Stephon Castle, the Texans will be at best a candidate for the play-in/playoffs. Not sure that is the objective targeted by DeMar DeRozan…
