Fine for illegal advertising? Former sponsorship boss accuses Cristiano Ronaldo of ambush marketing at European Championships

“Cristiano and WHOOP are engaging in ambush marketing at EURO 2024,” Fort wrote in a post on his X-account. “This is illegal and both the player and the company should be fined.”

The advertisement, which Fort describes as illegal, “is about a UEFA match, uses the names of the two national teams, the result and a player on the field. They imply a connection to the event. And that is illegal.”

The technology company WHOOP drew attention to X on Tuesday evening with a post in which it publicly shared Ronaldo’s heart rate during the European Championship round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia.

One of the things that could be seen was that the 39-year-old had a relatively low pulse rate of just 100 BPM before his decisive penalty in the penalty shootout. “When you’re Cristiano Ronaldo, you know no fear in football. See you in the quarter-finals, Portugal,” commented WHOOP.

The US company is Ronaldo’s official sponsor and partner and supplies the superstar with smartwatches, among other things.
