Austria’s men’s national team has improved by three places to 22nd place in the FIFA world rankings by reaching the round of 16 at the European Championships in Germany. The last time the ÖFB selection was ranked higher was eight years ago (10th place), and five and a half years ago – in December 2018 – it was also ranked 22nd.

After a flawless European Championship, Spain made a big leap with their final victory over England, moving up five places to third place. World champions Argentina continue to lead the rankings. The team led by captain Lionel Messi won the Copa America and are now at the top ahead of France, Spain, England and Brazil.
The ÖFB team won against Poland (3:1) and the Netherlands (3:2) in Germany. They did not score any points for the ranking against France (0:1) and in the round of 16 against Turkey (1:2).
Next stop Nations League
For the Austrians, who are now aiming to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America, the next Nations League matches will take place in September. They will start on September 6 in Ljubljana against European Championship round of 16 team Slovenia (52nd in the world rankings), and three days later they will play away in Oslo against Norway (50th). Their third group opponent is Kazakhstan (109th).
