Football Festival in Paradise: FC Carl Zeiss Jena Celebrates New Stadium with European Showdown

Football festival in paradise!

The fans of FC Carl Zeiss Jena have had to wait more than two decades for this day. That is how long political discussions and plans were held about a new football stadium at Kernbergen, and it was finally built.

The new ad-hoc football arena in the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld was officially inaugurated with a ceremony including the handover of the keys and a match against Sampdoria Genoa.

And 11,197 spectators came, celebrated both teams at the European Cup revival and enjoyed an organized fireworks display in the Jena night sky after the final whistle!

Very strong: Almost 400 Tifosi travelled from Genoa.

In sporting terms, it was a 2-1 victory for the Italians. Massimo Coda (12th) and Lorenzo Venuti (45th) set the course for victory for Sampdoria, coached by world champion Andrea Pirlo, in the first half. After the break, Joel Richter reduced the deficit to 1-2 (67th) for the FCC. In the end, however, the result was of secondary importance.

Carl Zeiss had to contend with a few personnel problems. Keeper Marius Liesegang (hematoma on the foot) and Kay Seidemann (torn muscle fiber) were out in the run-up to the game, and after a quarter of an hour, coach Henning Bürger’s worries deepened when Erik Weinhauer had to leave the field injured after a collision.

The Italians, who completed a 16-day training camp in Jena, travelled directly back to Genoa after the final whistle – for Carl Zeiss, the next match will be on Sunday (1 p.m.) with the home game against Hertha Zehlendorf.
