Football: Stade Rennais player to be tried at end of August after woman dies in scooter accident

An 18-year-old professional player from Stade Rennais has been summoned to appear before the city’s criminal court on August 23 to answer for the involuntary manslaughter of a pedestrian. He had hit her on his electric scooter in June, as confirmed by the prosecution.

The young man is a professional player for Stade Rennais who went through the club’s training center. He was taken into police custody on Wednesday and was brought before the public prosecutor the following day.

Tried for involuntary manslaughter

He will be tried for “involuntary manslaughter by the driver of a motor vehicle and a clearly deliberate violation of a safety or prudence obligation,” Rennes public prosecutor Philippe Astruc told AFP.

He is also accused of “lack of insurance”. According to the local press, a minor who was a passenger on the scooter, which is prohibited, is also registered at the training center.

The pedestrian, a 51-year-old woman, died on June 24 after being hit on June 18. The driver and his minor passenger were interviewed at the scene by investigators, and tests did not reveal any alcohol or drug use, according to the magistrate.
