French Pair Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar Officially Qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics After Legal Battle

The outcome is happy for the French pair. After a long legal battle, Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar officially join the contingent of badminton players who will participate in the Paris 2024 Games. 15 days before the start of the Games, the IOC has validated – following the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport – the participation of a 17th pair in the men’s doubles table.

“Badminton is leaving this unacceptable affair behind with a bang after the surprise and late modification of the rankings following a calculation error dating back to May 2023.” The French Badminton Federation (FFBaD) is happy with this outcome.

The Lucas Corvée/Ronan Labar pair will indeed be present at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Since the end of April, the Norman and the Aix native have been fighting – with the support of the FFBaD – to live their athletic dream by participating in the Games at home. “A long and trying fight that finally bore fruit: the CAS forced the international federation (BWF) to request an exception to qualify a 17th pair in a draw that normally only has 16. The IOC accepted this request. This change will mean that the men’s doubles draw will be played with 3 pools of four pairs and 1 pool of five pairs,” indicates the FFBaD.

As a reminder, qualification for the Games in badminton, the “Race to Paris”, is based on the best results obtained between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024. “Last April, the badminton world was shocked to discover major changes to the rankings, impacting around a hundred players. This surprise update particularly affected French players since it reversed the places of the two French pairs in the race: Lucas Corvée/Ronan Labar and Christo Popov/Toma Junior Popov. The former, who were ahead after the Badminton Euro, found themselves second at 29 points. The BWF confirmed its error in calculating points during the Sudirman Cup played in May 2023 and simply ratified its new ranking, putting an end to Lucas and Ronan’s Olympic dream,” the Federation recalls.

The players will join the Olympic training group at INSEP as soon as possible to prepare in the best conditions after this emotional rollercoaster. Today, like the 7 other French badminton players, they will know their opponents after the release of the tables.
