An opportunity to discover the best French archers, but also one of the oldest associations in the Pays de Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne), created in 1698! From July 5 to 7, 2024, the Fontainebleau-Avon archery company is hosting the French para archery championship, within the Philippe-Mahut stadium in Fontainebleau.

122 archers competing in the French para archery championship

Friday will be a day dedicated to training, before the opening of competitions on Saturday (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and Sunday for the international 50 and 70 m distances (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) which will also be offered at the 2024 Paralympic Games.

The French para-archery team will also be present on Sunday. Some 122 archers will be competing, including several members of the Fontainebleau-Avon company: Eric Baudrit, Abdelkader Izri, Raphaël Perriraz, Luc Chevalier and Damien Fichten.

“It’s a real pleasure to organize an event that will mark the history of the company,” smiles Thierry Quehen, the president of the Fontainebleau-Avon archery company, which had already hosted the French “veterans and super-veterans” championship in 2003.

For this new deadline, major works have been carried out within the club, notably financed by the agglomeration of the Pays de Fontainebleau. Thus, the roof of the Bersault is currently being restored and the company now has a closed covered firing range, fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.

“It is one of the oldest traditional French shootings, like the rounds of the archers from the top of the fortifications,” explains Thierry Quehen. A point that is particularly close to the heart of the president who, in 2014, requested an affiliation to open the company to disabled sports.

“Opening the discipline to all”

“Here, we don’t make a distinction between disabled and able-bodied people: everyone is an archer,” he insists. “This new equipment will help develop and open up the discipline to everyone.”

The same observation is made by Pascal Gouhoury, the president of the Pays de Fontainebleau, who sees in the completion of this work “a strengthening of access to sport for the greatest number of people, particularly for people with disabilities.”

If the Fontainebleau-Avon archery company enjoys a certain notoriety in the sporting world, the club hopes to be able to introduce it to the inhabitants of the area since entry to the competition is free.

“This competition is also a way of reminding people that the company welcomes people with disabilities,” concludes Thierry Quehen. “The more we talk about adapted sport, particularly with the Paralympic Games, the more it will help people to get into sport.

The competition takes place on the association’s site, located at 1, route des Gorges de Franchard, in Fontainebleau. To access this area of the Mahut stadium, go past the Couperin high school (route d’Hurtault), to reach 1, route des Gorges de Franchard.
