From 1966 to 2024: The Journey of ‘Three Lions’ and the Spirit of England’s Football Anthem

From 1966 to 2024: The Journey of ‘Three Lions’ and the Spirit of England’s Football Anthem

The lyrics of the song “Three Lions” were written by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, with the support of the rock band Lightning Seeds (vocalist Ian Broudie wrote the music), with the intention of supporting the English team in the European Championship that they hosted in 1996, with its chorus “it’s coming home” as the cornerstone of the lyrics that exalt the return of international football 30 years after the organization and conquest of the 1966 World Cup.

It was the FA itself, the English federation, that asked the comedians to come up with a song that would inspire the troops in football boots and those who support them.

The song was also intended to celebrate the achievements of the ’66 generation of Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, who beat West Germany in the Wembley final. Baddiel wanted the song to ultimately reflect “what it’s like to be an England fan”, revealed to BBC Radio 5in 2021. Skinner confessed that it was a “bittersweet love song for the England team”.

Since then there has been an attempt to relaunch the song at the 1998 World Cup in France and at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but the team’s performance did not match the lyrics of the song.

In 2018, the song returned to the chants of English fans as the competition progressed, in which, despite the low expectations of the fans, they reached the semi-finals against the Croatian team.

From then on, music was always part of any moment of celebration for the English, whether in stadiums or pubs.

The fact that the ‘three lions’ team, since the World Cup in Russia, has performed well (reaching the final of Euro 2020, the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and the final of Euro 2024) makes its fans increasingly think that it really is “football’s coming home”.

Frank Skinner and David Baddiel became known throughout the United Kingdom for presenting the BBC’s “Fantasy Football League” program.

The English national team will play the 2024 European Championship final against the Spanish national team in Berlin next Sunday, in a game that could end two setbacks: the British team’s title drought that has lasted since 1966 and, taking into account only the 21st century, the victory of a team that is not from the south of the continent.

THE LYRICS OF THE SONG

The crosses of St George are flying all around me.
Gareth Southgate the whole of England is with you
Oh it’s saved, saved, saved
We still believe
We still believe
We still believe
It’s coming home, it’s coming home,
It’s coming football’s coming home
It’s coming home, it’s coming home
It’s coming football’s coming home
Tears for heroes dressed in grey.
No plans for final day.
Stay in bed, drift away
It could have been all
Songs in the street
it was nearly complete
it was nearly so sweet
and now I’m singing
Three lions on a shirt,
Jules Rimet still gleaming
No more years of hurt
No more need for dreaming
Talk about football coming home
And then one night in Rome…
We were strong, we had grown-
And now I see Ince ready for war,
Gazza good as before,
Shearer certain to score
and Psycho screaming
Three lions on a shirt,
Jules Rimet still gleaming,
No more years of hurt
No more need for dreaming
(Beautiful football by England,
Gazza oh that is majestic,
Alan Shearer,
Italy nil
England nil and we’re there in France 1998)
We can dance Nobby’s dance
we could dance it in France!
It’s coming home, it’s coming home
It’s coming football’s coming home
It’s coming home, it’s coming home
It’s coming football’s coming home
It’s coming home, it’s coming home
It’s coming football’s coming home
It’s coming home, it’s coming home
It’s coming football’s coming home
Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
No more years of hurt
No more need for dreaming
Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
No more years of hurt
No more need for dreaming
Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
No more years of hurt
No more need for dreaming
