From Beach Volleyball Player to Sports Department Director: Aleksandrs Samoilovs’ Career Transition

On July 10, it was announced that, as a result of an open competition, Aleksandrs Samoilovs was appointed as the head of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Interior. A total of 13 applicants participated in this competition.

Samoilovs admitted that right now it is necessary to actively start thinking about the next steps after the end of his professional sports career.

“The culmination of my professional career has always been the Olympics. Unfortunately, I failed to qualify for the Olympic Games this year. Neither through the ranking, nor through the internal selection of the Continental Cup. I am not getting any younger. I am not a robot. My body at 39 makes itself felt. I don’t stay physically stronger, but I do get smarter, ” said Samoilov.

He also admitted that he is not ready to say goodbye to the sport, even if his days as a professional volleyball player are coming to an end. Already in his childhood, he knew that even after the end of his professional career, he would continue to be a part of the Latvian sports family.

“I found out that there was a vacancy for the position of director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science and I applied for the competition. There were three levels of selection that I passed. I have a very good education, which I think helped. As far as I understand, the ministry lacks athletes. Also in one of the minister for interviews [Anda Čakša] said that as a non-athlete it is sometimes difficult for her to make decisions that would affect Latvian athletes.

It was not a spontaneous decision. I rarely accept them,” said Samoilov.

Although it is clear that the end of his career is not far away, Samoilov did not want to announce the end of the athlete’s career yet.

“I can’t officially announce it yet, but in international competitions… I probably won’t be able to combine [spēlētāja un IZM vadītāja amatus]. There is a lot of work to be done here, so now I will put all my resources to the maximum in the work of the ministry.

In the stage of the Latvian championship in Liepāja in three weeks, I will definitely compete,” said the beach volleyball player.

During his professional career, Samoilovs competed in three Olympic Games, as well as won the silver medal of the European Championship in 2013.
