From Judoka to Olympic Coach: The Inspiring Journey of Nicolas Sigaud

Originally from Haute-Loire, near Saugues, Nicolas Sigaud has just published an autobiographical story with Editions Verone retracing the unique and atypical journey of this high-level athlete who participated as Benin’s coach in the last Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Nicolas Sigaud is from “Vabres” in Alleyras. “We are from the country of our childhood…”, he likes to say, reciting a phrase from Saint-Exupéry. “Lost in the gorges of the Allier, Vabres is a place that is both magical and wild, it is the place where I feel best because it certainly resembles me.”

Judo, his second family

His career as an athlete has led him to travel to many countries around the world: China, Japan, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Germany. With judo as a common thread. “Judo is a wonderful passport for meetings and travel. But here it is really special, the color and the sound of nature, sometimes even the silence of the places rests me and inspires me… In this department, I have the recognition of judo people and I regularly intervene on the tatamis of the Puy-en-Velay club or as part of the actions of the Haute-Loire Departmental Committee. I try to pass on what judo has given me but also the values instilled in my youth by my grandparents from the land of Gévaudan.”

“Life as a Sweep” is an autobiographical story that traces the unique journey of a high-level judoka, who was diagnosed with aggressive cancer at the age of 22. In this ordeal, he finds in his passion a form of resilience that commands respect.

Benin coach at the Tokyo Olympics

Obtaining his coaching diploma, with a specialization in “sports performance”, he subsequently became the national coach of Benin, which would take him on a unique adventure, up to the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. From the opening ceremony, through life in the Olympic village, he achieved his dream and lived these extraordinary moments intensely.

This unusual and sometimes overwhelming life journey gave him the desire to write, to convey hope and the will to never stop pursuing his dream, despite the obstacles.
