(Guiyang, China=Xinhua News Agency) As the price of shuttlecocks soars due to the popularity of badminton in China, related industries are booming.

Jinping County in Guizhou Province, home to a diverse mix of ethnicities, was once a poverty-stricken county. In 2017, Jinping County attracted the British badminton brand RSL and began producing badminton equipment.

Jinping County produces more than 100,000 badminton shuttlecocks every day and supplies them to the world.

Guizhou RSL Sports and Culture Development Company, which invested a total of 248 million yuan (about 47.12 billion won), is dedicated to shuttlecock production. It has created more than 500 jobs.

After years of development, the production value reached 340 million yuan (64.6 billion won) last year. The production volume of shuttlecocks is more than 4 million dozen (12 pieces), and the products worth 9 million dollars are exported to 60 countries (regions).

“It is estimated that about one in ten shuttlecocks in the world are produced here,” said Hu Bing, production manager of Guizhou RSL Sports and Culture Development Company, adding that they are shipped out as soon as they are produced.

In the first half of this year alone, more than 2.3 million dozen were produced, achieving a production value of 185 million yuan (35.1 billion won). Exports also increased by 40% compared to the same period last year.

The person in charge said, “The number of people who are concerned about health management and exercise is increasing,” and “We judged that the overall badminton market was promising, so we expanded equipment and personnel in advance last year.” He added that the rising cost of raw materials led to an increase in the price of badminton products.

Guizhou Datongli Sports Goods Company, located near Guizhou RSL Sports and Culture Development Company, is in a similar situation.

“The new factory just came into operation this month,” said CEO Zhang Weiping, adding that production capacity has doubled, with 91 employees now producing 4,500 dozen shuttlecocks a day.

“We mainly produce high-end shuttlecocks. We are producing high-quality shuttlecocks at high prices by introducing new materials, new processes, and new technologies on our new production line. 80% of the products produced here are exported to countries such as Malaysia and the UK,” said CEO Jang.

Due to various factors such as the rapid rise in shuttlecock prices and the increase in the number of badminton players, sales of other products including nylon shuttlecocks and plastic shuttlecocks have also increased.

“There are many artificial feather shuttlecocks on the market,” said the manager. “There are some good ones, but there is still a difference compared to natural feather shuttlecocks.”
