You have to have ideas!

First she shone with topless photos in Ukrainian Vogue, now tennis star Marta Kostyuk (22) is causing another sensation. In the first round of Wimbledon, the Ukrainian easily beat Slovakian Rebecca Šramková (27) 6:3, 6:2. She wore – her wedding dress!

In November 2023, the world number 19 married her boyfriend George Kyzymenko (27) in Cyprus. All in white, as she now appears seven months later at the most important tennis tournament.

Sleeveless, low-cut and mostly backless, Kostyuk delights her fans with an almost perfect copy of her wedding dress. The question remains: is she playing in a wedding dress or did she get married in a Wimbledon dress? The answer is up to each individual.

Kostyuk told Vogue: “I wanted something very simple, but at the same time something that would be memorable. I just knew I didn’t want a wedding dress that weighed 200 kilos, or anything that was either so complicated or fragile that you couldn’t move in it and it wasn’t fun to be around people.”

Kostyuk wanted two dresses

So she sat down with Joelle Michaeloff, the designer of her outfitter Wilson. “We thought: ‘Why not be the first tennis brand to make a wedding dress?'” said the Kiev native.

“During the fittings, we decided it would be cool to have two dresses: one just for the ceremony and another for the party, dinner – something simpler, more comfortable,” says Kostuyk.

The solution was quickly found: “We agreed that the overdress for the ceremony should be long and covered with flowers, but still a little transparent, and the second dress should be the same underdress, but with a simple, short, transparent white overdress.”

Not only did she walk down the aisle, but she also walked onto Court 4 at Wimbledon like this. “She comes onto the court with all the ‘layers’ on and then takes off this overdress, which looks exactly like the wedding dress because it has five buttons down the front. I made her a quick-release option so she can take it off quickly. What’s underneath is basically the original dress, but with ball shorts,” says Michaeloff.

The wedding guests and tennis fans were and are thrilled. But who is the lucky man at her side? Little is known about him. Kostyuk: “I’ve known him since I was four. As children we trained at the same tennis club in Kiev, but at some point he went to study in the USA and I became a professional.”

But then came one of the few bright spots in the year the war began. “We didn’t really have contact, but when I went to Ukraine in 2022, he called me to arrange to meet me, and yes – that was it.”

After five months, the marriage proposal came. Kostyuk: “We just woke up together and he said something like: ‘Let’s watch the sunrise.’ We went, I recorded something on video, and when I turned around, he was kneeling in front of me.” So Kostyuk is lucky in gambling – and in love.

Oh yes: anyone can buy the dress, it is not unique. Cost: 298 euros.
