George Springer’s Three-Run Homer Leads Blue Jays to Victory Over Astros

George Springer hit a three-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays cruised to a 7-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday. The right fielder capped a four-run third inning with his ninth home run of the season.

Spencer Horwitz had homered three batters earlier, with two outs. Springer hit his fourth homer in seven games.

“That’s kind of what we’ve been missing lately: a big hit that’s going to pay off with guys on base,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.

In the first inning, Justin Turner gave the Jays the lead with an RBI single, again with two outs. Toronto added two runs in the fourth on a passed ball and an RBI double by Addison Barger. Jose Berrios (8-6) allowed five runs and five hits in five innings.

Nate Pearson and Trevor Richards linked the third save to Chad Green.

Green allowed a double to leadoff hitter Jeremy Pena in the ninth. He responded with two swinging strikeouts before walking out Jose Altuve. Altuve had three singles in the game.

“We fought hard,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “We gave ourselves a chance at the end.”

Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run homer in a losing cause.

Spencer Arrighetti (4-7) allowed seven runs and six hits in four innings.

The Astros had won three straight games, while the Blue Jays had lost their last two.

Among the crowd was Ontario’s Shaedon Sharpe of the Portland Trail Blazers.
