Sané hopes to be in the starting eleven again

After being allowed to start against Denmark for the first time at this European Championship, Leroy Sané is hoping to play again in the quarter-final duel with Spain. “The longer playing time did me good,” the 28-year-old explained on Tuesday at the DFB press conference in Herzogenaurach. In the previous group matches, the FC Bayern professional only made three short appearances.

His strength is the runs behind the chain, into the depth, “which open up spaces in the middle,” said Sané, describing his role. But Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz can do that too. National coach Julian Nagelsmann has not yet made a decision: “But he communicates very openly and each of us accepts that well.”

Only Can is missing from the first DFB training

There are still three days until the German team faces the European Championship quarter-final against Spain. On Tuesday (July 2, 2024), Julian Nagelsmann called for the first training session of the direct preparation. With the exception of Emre Can, who according to the DFB is doing an individual program due to minor muscular problems, all 25 players in the squad were gathered on the training ground in Herzogenaurach.

Sportschau expert Broich: DFB team must be “pressure-resistant”

In the quarter-final duel with Spain, Thomas Broich expects the German team to be put under a lot of pressure: “The counter-pressing of the Spaniards is hardcore.” The DFB team must be “extremely clean on the ball” and “rotate positions” in order to find solutions. It is important not to take too many risks, but always “to protect the moment of possible loss of the ball.”

Tactical means against Spain

There are opportunities to embarrass the Spaniards, who have been playing so well so far. Defensively, “close the middle,” is how Joshua Kimmich sums it up, in order to stop the wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. In attack, quick diagonal passes could help, as Georgia showed in the round of 16 against the Iberians.

Why Spain is the better opponent for Germany

It is a much more difficult task: host Germany will face Spain in the European Championship quarter-finals (July 5, 2024, 6 p.m., live on Das Erste and on sportschau.de) – and not Georgia. “La Roja” gave the Eastern Europeans no chance in their furious 4-1 victory in the round of 16. Sportschau editor Christian Schulze is looking forward to the “anticipated final” – and explains why Spain is the better opponent for the DFB selection.

Does Spain have to pay a fine for top talent Yamal?

The Spanish match against Germany on Friday in Stuttgart takes place at 6 p.m. So it will not be a problem for Lamine Yamal. Nevertheless, a German law has created a curiosity in the case of the 16-year-old. Yamal has apparently worked too long several times – sanctions are threatened.

Balanced record at European Championships

Germany and Spain have already met twice at European Championships. In addition to the DFB team’s 2-0 victory at the 1988 European Championship, which has already been mentioned, there was a Spanish revenge 20 years later – in the final of the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland.

The DFB team had been carried through the tournament by a wave of euphoria and had high hopes of winning their fourth title. But in the final it quickly became clear that the southern Europeans were clearly superior. The Iberians shone with their Tiki-Taka game, while Germany lagged behind. The result was closer than the game itself. Ultimately, Spain won 1-0 thanks to Fernando Torres’ golden goal, but the DFB team had no chance.

Spanish press confident, but at the same time with respect

Spain will face hosts Germany in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship. A duel that, despite its high spirits, has not exactly generated enthusiasm among the Spanish press.

Encouragement for Germany

It is the duel of the strongest offensive teams of the 2024 European Championship so far – the quarter-final duel between hosts Germany and Spain (July 5, 2024, 6 p.m., live on Das Erste and on sportschau.de). The Spaniards are probably the most convincing team in the tournament so far, but one statistic is encouraging for the DFB team: “La Roja” has never managed to beat the host at a European Championship or a World Cup. At the 1988 European Championship, for example, there was also a 2-0 defeat against the German selection. Rudi Völler scored a brace back then. In five tournaments, the southern Europeans have therefore been eliminated in the knockout rounds. The “law of series” is therefore in Germany’s favor.

Press conference with Joshua Kimmich and David Raum

After the very convincing 4:1 (1:1) victory of the Spanish in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship against outsiders Georgia, the round of the best eight will come to an “anticipated final”. In Stuttgart, hosts Germany will face Spain. A game in which the full-backs will be particularly important, because the southern Europeans have excellent wingers and playing down the flanks is one of the preferred stylistic devices of coach Luis de la Fuente’s team. Joshua Kimmich (right) and David Raum (left) recently worked the wings for the DFB team. These two players will be particularly important against Spain – and both will speak at a press conference in Herzogenaurach at 2 p.m. about how they intend to tackle the difficult task. The press conference will be streamed live on sportschau.de.
