As announced, Olivier Giroud will no longer play for the French national team. The 37-year-old record goalscorer has now officially completed his previously announced withdrawal from the selection. “The moment I was dreading has come: the moment to say goodbye to the French national team,” Giroud wrote on Instagram.

The 2018 world champion scored 57 goals for France. He played his last international match in the 1:2 European Championship semi-final against eventual European champions Spain, in which the striker was substituted in the final stages. The national team and its staff have become a second family to him, wrote Giroud. The attacker particularly thanked national coach Didier Deschamps for his trust.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan player will continue his career at club level. Giroud will play in Major League Soccer for Los Angeles FC.
