Government Refuses Funding for Latvian Men’s National Hockey Team’s Olympic Preparation, Allocates Less for Basketball Team

The initial plan was to allocate funding to the Latvian Hockey Federation to cover expenses related to the Latvian men’s national hockey team’s preparation and participation in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games selection tournament in men’s hockey in Latvia this year. A total of 815,751 euros was planned to be allocated to both national teams.

The information available on the legal acts portal shows that the Ministry of Finance (FM) did not support the request of the Ministry of the Interior. It referred to the cooperation meeting of the Coalition parties on February 19, in which it was agreed not to request funding for sports events from contingency funds this year.

The FM also reminded that the government already allocated 2,319,330 euros of contingency funds to both sports events this year.

Now the Ministry of Education and Culture is asking to allocate 388,130 euros only to the Latvian Basketball Association to cover expenses related to the preparation and participation of the Latvian men’s national basketball team in the qualification group tournament of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This is 11,300 euros less than originally requested.

It has already been announced that the qualifying group tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 2 to July 7. At the qualification tournament in Riga, the Latvian men’s basketball team will meet Georgia and the Philippines in Group A, while Brazil, Montenegro and Cameroon will play in Group B. Only the winner of the tournament gets a ticket to the Olympic Games.

On the other hand, the men’s ice hockey tournament with the participation of the Latvian national team will take place from August 29 to September 1 in “Rīga Arena”.
