Gregg Popovich Stays Active in Offseason, Eyes Roster for 2024-25 NBA Season

Gregg Popovich never rests. Despite being in the summer and not having a current obligation with the Spurs, since there is still a long time until the preseason training camp arrives, the veteran coach is closely following everything that happens in the team, especially regarding the creation of the roster that it will have for the 2024-25 NBA season.

Attending Summer League matches, Pops recently looked after Doris Burke and Mark Jones of ESPNHe spoke to them about the pleasant impression that newcomer Stephon Castle had made on him, as well as what it means for the project to incorporate two veterans like Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, to whom he gives a specific objective.

“I think Paul will teach everyone about the game a lot better than I could. Having him and Harrison at this stage of their careers is really great for the young guys we have,” he said, making it clear that he hopes they will be mentors in the locker room.

Regardless of what Paul and Barnes bring, it is not clear what direction Spurs will take in the coming season. On the one hand, they could try to compete with a generational player in their ranks in Victor Wembanyama. On the other, it is also an option to rethink the season as a transition year to lay the foundations for a winning team.
