MADRID, 4 (EUROPA PRESS)

Dutch cyclist Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) won the sixth stage of the Tour de France on Thursday, contested between Mâcon and Dijon over 163.5 kilometres, in a clean sprint in which he overtook strong rivals to confirm his recent improvement and add his sixth victory in the French round.

Groenewegen finished fifth in the third stage but was unable to get into the mix on Wednesday, the day Mark Cavendish (Astana) made history at the Tour de France. But the Dutchman, recently crowned road champion in his country, is in good form and showed it in Dijon, taking the good line of the sprint.

He narrowly edged out Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), second for the second day in a row, and the green points jersey wearer Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), who was third on a quiet day, without any major falls or scares, unlike the previous day.

With this victory, Groenewegen has six career stage wins in the Tour de France, the same as Philipsen. So there may be more fights for stage wins and to break this balance. What is certain is that the Dutchman is going from strength to strength and that the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter may be burdened by the fact that he has already taken two second places.

Like Mark Cavendish’s victory on Wednesday, Groenewegen’s victory was a ‘cook it, eat it’ kind of thing. He did try to follow in the footsteps of the Alpecina train, but as soon as Belgian Arnaud de Lie (Lotto Dstny) opened up to the left and began his sprint, the Dutchman followed him, overtook him and then pulled away to win. A clean sprint, although Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) found himself somewhat trapped by the barriers and complained.

There were no changes in the general classification in this sixth stage, which is still led by Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) with a 45-second lead over Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and 50 over Danish and reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).

This Friday, the Tour de France will present a new test for the contenders for the yellow jersey, with the 25.3-kilometre individual time trial between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin. A tricky time trial, with the central climb to Curley and flat sections at the start and end. Much uncertainty and, perhaps, changes in the general classification.
