GS Meiersheide from Hennef Wins District School Championship in ‘Youth Trains for the Olympics’ Competition

Event as part of “Youth trains for the Olympics”

The state finals of the schools as part of the “Youth trains for the Olympics” competition took place on June 25th in the judo hall of the Wedau sports school in Duisburg. The best schools from the five state districts of Cologne, Arnsberg, Münster, Detmold and Düsseldorf took part. Four highly motivated fighters competed for the Meiersheide Hennef comprehensive school (male): Maxim Rauch (-35kg), Daniel Rempel (-40kg), Julian Augst (-46kg) and Oliver Kulaga (+55kg), all successful members of the Hennef Judo Club. Unfortunately, the weight class up to 55kg could not be filled and so the team had to fight even harder in order to collect enough points.

The first round against the Ceciliengymnasium Bielefeld (RB Detmold) ended 4:1 in favor of the GS Meiersheide. In the second round, the Hennef team had to compete against the feared defending champion Ruhr-Gymnasium Witten (RB Arnsberg), but also won 3:2. The same was true of the third round against the Gesamtschule Hardt from Mönchengladbach (RB Düsseldorf), which won 3:1. The final and decisive test was against the Goethe-Gymnasium from Ibbenbüren (RB Münster). The judoka from Hennef won 4:1.

This meant that GS Meiersheide was the winner of the district school championships (male) and received a ticket to the national finals on September 15th to 19th in Berlin. The joy was huge, as this is the first time that GS Meiersheide from Hennef has taken part in the national finals.
