American basketball player Klay Thompson’s father, Michael, has expressed disappointment in his son’s decision to sign a contract with the Dallas Mavericks, the finalist of the National Basketball Association (NBA), in an interview with “SiriusXM NBA Radio”.

It has already been announced that Golden State Warriors legend, four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson changed teams for the first time in his career, joining the Mavericks. The experienced defender had spent his entire career with the Warriors, but could not find a common denominator for a new contract.

Several teams showed interest in Thompson, including the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that Klay’s father Michael, who once won two titles with, remains involved with the organization as a radio commentator for the team’s games. Michael was not happy about Clay moving to Texas State.

“I’m not in the mood to congratulate anybody right now,” Michael Thompson said of his son’s decision to join the Mavericks. “Yes, of course it’s Clay’s decision, it’s his life. He is a grown man, he is 34 years old. We too were once 34, our fathers gave us advice, but we chose our own path, because life has to be that way. But I am disappointed. As you can tell, I was hoping he would become a Lakers player. It was close to happen – everything was in the hands of “Lakers” and “Mavs”, and “Mavs” won this battle. But you know me – I hoped and prayed that he would finish his career with the Lakers.”

“When Klay told me that the Lakers were going to negotiate, of course I tried to convince him about the idea of playing for the Lakers,” continued Michael Thompson. “It felt like the right thing to do, and I still think it was the right thing to do because I really believe in this organization. The team has been great to me and my family, including Clay. Clay grew up as a Lakers fan, his idol, just like his peers, was Kobe Bryant. I thought everything was perfect for him to finally come home.”

“Klay and I had always talked about what it would be like if he played in Los Angeles – if he didn’t represent the Warriors, where else would he want to play? But he had a choice, and when it came, he chose the Mavericks instead. But I’ll live with it. I’ll take it, I’m happy for him because he’s happy with his decision,” said Michael Thompson.
