In Tribute to Zhang Zhi Jie: China Wins Badminton Asia Championship 2024

JAKARTA – The Chinese team successfully emerged as the champion of the Badminton Asia Championship (BAJC) 2024. It’s just that their euphoria must be wrapped in sorrow because they were left behind by Zhang Zhi Jie last weekend.

The title was secured by the badminton country after defeating South Korea with a score of 3-1 in the final match at GOR Among Rogo, Yogyakarta on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, noon WIB.

The title is China’s ninth title at the event. They previously emerged champions in the 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 editions.

China got points from Hu Ke Yuan/Lin Xiang Yi (Uganda’s son), Wang Zi Jun (end of son) and Chen Fan Shu Tian/Lu Jia Yue (Uganda’s female).

The Hu/Lin pair opened up a Chinese lead after beating the South Korean pair Lee Hyeong-woo/Lee Jong-min, with the final points of 21-14 and 21-19.

South Korea then levelled through Kim Min-Sun in the second game. He beat Chinese singles player Xu Wen Jing in rubber matches, 21-7, 19-21, and 21-14.

China then earned two more points against Wang Zi Jun and Chen/Laju. Wang beat South Korean men’s singles Lee Sun-jin 21-13, 1-8, while Chen/Laju beat South Korean women’s doubles Kim Min-ji/Yeon Seo with two straight games, 21-16, 22-20.

China climbed to this year’s podium on the sad news of the death of its main son, Zhang Zhi Jie, on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

The athlete first collapsed while playing against Japanese representative Kazuma Kite. He was then rushed to hospital, but his life was not helped.

As a final gift, Chinese men’s singles coach Zhang Qi walked out onto the podium wearing the jersey of the late Zhi Jie. This moment excited all the Chinese players and made them shiver.

On this occasion, players from Malaysia, Indonesia and South Korea, who participated in the podium, immediately expressed their condolences.
