Tragedy struck the badminton world in Indonesia when 17-year-old Chinese star Zhang Zhijie collapsed during the Asian Junior Championships in Yogyakarta.

The youngster collapsed on the pitch on Sunday and, despite being rushed to hospital, died of cardiac arrest overnight. Footage of the incident shows a worrying 40-second delay before medical assistance arrived, raising questions about the effectiveness of the emergency response.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that it will launch a thorough investigation into the tragic incident. The BWF stressed that it is taking all necessary steps to thoroughly investigate the matter, in consultation with Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI).

A PBSI spokesperson attributed the delay in emergency intervention to the referee’s compliance with BWF rules. The BWF said it would reassess its guidelines in light of the investigation’s findings.

The federation is currently awaiting an official report from Badminton Asia and the local organising committee, which will determine whether proper medical procedures were followed when Zhang collapsed.

Zhang Zhijie’s death has plunged the badminton community into mourning, highlighting the importance of a rapid and effective medical response at sporting events. The planned review by the BWF aims to ensure such tragedies can be avoided in the future.
