Free agency requires that some players manage to get themselves a huge jackpot after having been relatively anonymous a year earlier. The departure of a player from New York in particular provoked a viral reaction from one of his now ex-teammates…

Sometimes one good season can change your entire career. Just ask Isaiah Hartenstein… Just a year ago, the center wasn’t exactly a household name around the league. And yet, he played a pivotal role in the Knicks’ excellent 2023-24 campaign, perfectly replacing an injured Mitchell Robinson in the starting five, averaging 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds.

As a result, his stock skyrocketed before the opening of free agency and it was the Thunder who got their hands on him with a very nice contract at stake for the player ($87 million over three years). Not bad for a big man who only had 14 career starts before this season… The announcement of his departure from the Big Apple did, however, spark some reactions, including that of his former teammate Miles McBride:

We, you are not mistaken: at first glance, Hartenstein seems as white as can be. This is in fact a kind of long-running running gag on the little-known mixed race of the German pivot. Which sometimes led to some pretty funny situations.…Whether he is white or African-American, however, the man has quickly become a darling of Madison Square Garden and is already missed by fans.

We will miss the black Jokic 💔🫡

Combative and tough under the rim, Isaiah Hartenstein perfectly matched the blue-collar profile dear to the Knicks public. He will now be Chet Holmgren’s playing partner at the Thunder, one of whose weak points was precisely his dominance on the rebound.
