“It is an honour to be at the table of great champions”

“I’ve done my job, now let’s watch football”

MADRID, 14 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was excited and “very happy” after winning his second Wimbledon title on Sunday, again at the expense of Serbian Novak Djokovic as last year, confessing the “honour” of being “at the table of great champions”, with his fourth ‘Grand Slam’ and after winning Roland Garros a month ago.

“It’s a dream for me to win this trophy. In an interview when I was 11 or 12 I said that my dream was to win Wimbledon, so I’m fulfilling my dream again. I want to move on, but it’s a great feeling to play on this beautiful court and lift this incredible trophy. This is the most beautiful tournament, the most beautiful court and the most beautiful trophy,” said the new champion.

A very nervous Alcaraz appeared on court shortly after sealing his three-set victory (6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4)) over Djokovic, with the tension still on from a final set that went into a tie-break when he was 5-4 and 40-0 up. “40-0 but Djokovic is a great fighter, I knew he was going to have his chances. I knew I had to be calm but I couldn’t at that moment. It was difficult, I tried to stay calm and go to the tie-break, play my best tennis. I’m happy, in the end I found the solutions,” he confessed.

The player from El Palmar was also asked about his feat of winning the French Open and Wimbledon in a row. “Fighting and believing. It’s a great honour to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. I’m very happy to be at the same table as Djokovic, and at the same table as great champions. I don’t consider myself a great champion yet, not of their calibre, but I’m trying to build my path and it’s a great honour,” he said.

On the other hand, Alcaraz congratulated Djokovic for having reached the final when a month ago he withdrew from Roland Garros and had to undergo surgery to treat his knee. He also thanked his “team and family” for four “incredible weeks” in which they knew that “he had a chance of getting a good result.”

The Murcia native was also asked about the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England tonight in Berlin, and he was diplomatic again, as after the semi-finals, not wanting to anger the English public. “I will watch the match with my team for sure. I have done my job, I’m going to watch football,” he concluded.
