Italian association calls new elections

After the embarrassing exit from the European Championships in Germany, the Italian Football Association has announced new elections. The elections originally planned for March 2025 have been brought forward to November 4th.

According to Italian media reports, it is unclear whether the current head of the association, Gabriele Gravina, will stand for re-election. However, the 70-year-old declared last Saturday in Berlin after the four-time world champions’ European Championship round of 16 exit against Switzerland (0:2) that he would not resign.

Gravina and Spalletti under criticism

Gravina is also a key figure for national coach Luciano Spalletti. The association president backed the coach after the Italians’ disappointing performance.

“Spalletti has our trust. We need patience,” he said. The worst European Championship performance of the “Squadra Azzurra” since 2004 had sparked a lot of criticism at home. Gravina and Spalletti are also in the spotlight.
