Italian Jasmine Paolini continues her incredible season: The 28-year-old advanced to the round of 16 at Wimbledon on Friday.

Before 2024, Jasmine Paolini had never reached the second week of a Grand Slam. This year, the Tuscan has already achieved this feat three times. At the Australian Open, she made it to the round of 16, at the French Open she only lost in the final against world number one Iga Swiatek, and now she is back in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. On Friday, Paolini beat former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, who has slipped to 176th place due to injuries, 7-6 and 6-1.

After both players conceded a break in the first service game, they played on an equal footing. In view of this, the tiebreak was the logical consequence. The world number 7 showed all her self-confidence in this, played aggressively and won the first set. While Andreescu was much more prone to making mistakes from then on, Paolini started to soar, which culminated in her easy win in the second set.

In the round of 16, the Italian, who had not won a single match at Wimbledon before this year’s edition, will face the American Madison Keys (WTA 13), who defeated the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (WTA 19) 6:4, 6:3. Thanks to her place in the round of 16, Paolini is virtually ranked 6th in the world rankings.
