Jalen Brunson’s Economic Concession: A Win-Win Deal for the Knicks

Great economic concession of Jalen Brunson to the Knicks that will allow the New York team to have salary flexibility in the coming years. The point guard has agreed to extend his contract until 2029, receiving 156.5 million dollars in 4 years, according to the report Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN).

The extension will begin in the 2025-2026 season with a salary of $34.94 million; in 2026-2027 he will receive $37.74 million; in 2027-2028, $40.54 million; and in 2028-2029 (player option) his salary will reach $43.33 million. Seen like this, it seems like a huge contract, but the truth is that Brunson’s financial concession to his team is unprecedented.

This is unprecedented because if Brunson had extended the contract not now but in 2025, he could have earned a maximum of $269.1 million for 5 years. That is, he would have secured almost $113 million more than what he signed now.

The Knicks will thus save $11.45 million in salaries in 2025-2026, $12.36 million in 2026-2027 and $13.28 million in 2027-2028.

If Brunson signs an extension in 2028, he could sign a maximum of 323 million for 4 years and if he does it in 2029, it could go to 418 million for 5.

Brunson has been with the Knicks for two seasons and has taken charge of the team, a winning team, in exemplary fashion.

The 27-year-old left-handed guard, an All-Star for the first time in 2024, was at his best last season, averaging 28.7 points and 6.7 assists in 77 games on 40.1% shooting from three-point range. He also led the injury-plagued Knicks to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
